AR navigation is not a novelty on a screen you were already looking at. It answers one question a two-dimensional map answers badly: which of those five identical ridgelines is the one I am supposed to cross.

Slope angle and aspect sampled at the point you are aiming at.
Fly the planned line over the terrain mesh before you walk it.
The same DEM drives both the 3D view and the 2D shaded relief, so they never disagree.
AR quality depends on the handset's sensors. The app tells you when the pose confidence is low instead of drawing a confident wrong overlay.
